John Carter Morgan

Attorney John Carter Morgan grew up in Northern Virginia and he is a devoted family man. John has felt the embarrassment and pain of financial burdens and filed a personal bankruptcy himself years ago. He has been practicing bankruptcy law for over 30 years all across the Commonwealth of Virginia. John attended law school at George Mason University School of Law, graduating in 1988. He started his career as the Trust Officer and corporate counsel for a regional bank with his office in Middleburg, Virginia. After a period of time, during the mega recession that started in 1989, it became apparent that the trust company was not going to be a profitable revenue maker for the bank, and the bank “let him go”. He was there and then out of work.

At this same time, Mr. Morgan was expecting a child and lived in a very small town that bordered two counties. He hung up his shingle in Middleburg, and started a general practice. Focusing on criminal cases, he was on the court appointed list for three different counties. After many trials, he decided to move his law firm to the town that had the nicest judges: Warrenton, VA. There he set up his practice, focusing on criminal law and personal injury.

In the early 1990’s, people continually approached him, saying they needed to file a bankruptcy. Starting in 1990, he filed three or four the first year, increasing every year, until by 1995 he was filing two or three cases per week.  Everyone in the town kept refering to him as “That Bankruptcy Attorney”. They didn’t know that bankruptcy was less than a third of his practice at that time. However, the bankruptcy cases kept his doors open, paying the rent and his staff. Soon, he was filing a solid three cases per week, reaching up to four to five in a single week by the year 2000. Still, he didn’t regard it as that big a part of his overall practice until 2008, when it became his focus, filing an average of one a day through 2011, when filings decreased slightly each year until the pandemic.

Beyond his status as expert bankruptcy attorney with over 33 years of licensed legal experience, John was also a licensed Virginia real estate agent and closing attorney with over 40 years of experience in every aspect of real estate transactions from selling and leasing to construction and renovation.

He has found much useful teaching and a philosophy of life derived from the story of The Wizard of Oz. Many of his clients and employees refer to him as “The Wizard”.
